for observing the Web.
CCI
(Common Client Interface)
Allows Web clients
to communicate with external viewers or other applications.
CGI
(Common Gateway Interface)
A standard for
programs to interface with Web servers.
Clickable
Map
Another name for
an imagemap
DTD
(Document Type Definition)
A specification
for a mark-up language
Domain
Name
The alphabetic
name for a computer host.
FTP (File
Transfer Protocol)
A
means to exchange files across a network
Form
HTML element that
allows users to fill in information and submit it for processing.
Gopher
A protocol for
disseminating information on the Internet using a system of menus.
Graphical
browser
A Web client that
displays images and fonts.
HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol)
The native protocol of the
Web, used to transfer hypertext documents
Home page
An entry page for access to a local web.
HotJava
A Web browser capable of executing applets
written in the Java.
Hypermedia
Hypertext that may include multimedia:
text, graphics, images, sound and video
ISO (International Standards
Organization)
An international organization that sets
standards for many things. (http://www.iso.ch)
Internet
A global network of information via the
TCP/IP protocol.
LAN (Local Area Network)
Packet
A set of data handled as a unit in data
transmission
RFC (Request For Comments)
SGML (Standard Generalized Mark-Up
Language)
Server
A software application that provides
information or serves based on requests.
Telnet
A protocol for sharing information across
networks without graphics.
URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
The scheme for addressing on the Web; a URL
identifies a resource on the Web.
Usenet
A system for disseminating asynchronous
text discussion.
VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling
Language)
A specification for three-dimensional
rendering used in conjunction with Web browsers
Web (World Wide Web)
A Hypertext information and communication
system popularly used on the Internet.
